Tweeters Unite for the St George Winter Bird Festival
After the frenzied holiday season, the St. George Winter Bird Festival on the weekend of Thursday, January 25 to Saturday, January 27 is certain to be a fun and relaxing way to kick off your 2018. Hosted by the Red Cliffs Audubon Society and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, this 14th annual Southern Utah event is sponsored by the City of St. George, Hawkwatch, Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, Milne Jewelry, Washington County School District and Home Depot.
This popular 3-day weekend features more than a dozen educational speakers and your choice of numerous field trips, all with a goal “to intrigue and educate the public about these creatures by catering to both novice and expert birders.” In our uniquely diverse ecosystem – where three ecosystems come together here in Southwestern Utah – we have a wealth of feathered friends which festival-goers can view in the wild as well as through interactive means, including photography, during the St. George Winter Bird Festival.
Birding or birdwatching is considered by one enthusiast to be “the greatest pursuit available to a citizen of the modern world.” Others describe their favorite activity as “a lifelong scavenger hunt played anywhere and everywhere.” Among the more than 51.3 million devotees of this, one of the fastest growing, inexpensive and healthy hobbies – including former U. S. President Jimmy Carter and Ian Fleming, the James Bond creator – birding is also considered “equal parts science and poetry” coupled with enthusiastic hoots of victory, quiet reflection, and documenting adventures, whether in your own backyard or some exotic location in the world … like St. George, UT.
