Have You Seen Us in the Movies?
When you visit St. George you may find yourself experiencing a little déjà vu … that sensation you’ve been here before even if you know you haven’t. Perhaps the answer to this interesting feeling is can be found in the movies. The greater St. George area has been the backdrop for 55 movies over the years – and many, many commercials featuring our incredibly beautiful red rock country. No doubt, you’ve also seen our spectacular Snow Canyon State Park featured in more than one car commercial and “The Piano Guys” videos and asked, “how did they get a piano (or shiny new vehicle) up there?”
If you are post-retirement age, you might remember such “oldies but goodies” as John Wayne’s “The Conqueror” filmed here in 1954-55; “The King and Four Queens” starring Clark Gable shot here in 1956; in 1959 “They Came to Cordura” with Gary Cooper as the leading man with Rita Hayworth as his love interest; the story of our hometown boys, “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford and Katherine Ross which was met with rave reviews in 1969. “The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing” was filmed here in 1973 with Burt Reynolds, Lee J. Cobb, George Hamilton and Jay Silverheels in the lead roles; “Harry’s War” against the IRS in 1979 starring Edward Hermann; and, who can forget “The Car” with a mind of its own wreaking havoc and create mayhem in Zion National Park in 1977.
For those lovers of the silver screen who are a little bit younger, movies filmed in and around St. George in the decade of the 1980’s include the James Bond “Octopussy” released in 1983; “Romancing the Stone” with starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito (1984) and its 1985 sequel “Jewel of the Nile” with much the same cast. Younger movie watchers will certainly remember a younger Indiana Jones living in Southern Utah in the 1985 movie, “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” as well as the very popular “High School Musical 2” filmed not far from our own Tuacahn Center for the Arts and released in 2007 as a sequel to the earlier success of “High School Musical.”
After your southern Utah vacation and from now on, you’ll find yourself wondering with every movie set against spectacular red desert scenery, “is that St. George?” and there’s a good chance it will be.
